Choosing the Right Desktop PC for Your Needs

without comments

There are great number of peripherals to take into account when buying a new personal PC. It is usually difficult to find the best piece of equipment to suit your situation, since new technologies become available and desktop PC manufacturers enhance their products. If you’re looking for a standard desktop computer you have to be looking to spend a maximum of $300. Needless to say, this is if you currently have a monitor, keyboard set and mouse to use with it. If you’re looking for a much better personal computer equipped to handle more advanced software, you’re likely to be spending anything as much as $1500 and more. Here’s some tips about what to look for when making your final decision.

Computer Tower Unit

That’s usually where all the number-crunching takes place; it’s basically ‘the computer’. You’ll be aware of it as the whirring box under your computer desk or monitor. It’s usually the costliest component of any desktop computer arrangement and therefore needs great consideration. The processor chip is the computer’s brain, and the more gigahertz (GHz) which it possesses means how fast it’ll work. For typical computing choose a CPU with either one or two cores, for example an Intel Pentium or Core 2 Duo. These processors should run within the range of 1-2 GHz and be capable of running the majority of software programs. For more sophisticated tasks, choose a quad-core processor, like an Intel Core 2 Quad or AMD Phenom II x4. These CPUs run within the range of about 2-3 GHz. Keep in mind that the gigahertz rating for a PC is for one core, for example, a 2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo will run at a theoretical 5 GHz. Consider a faster CPU for things like computer-aided design and 3D video gaming. All standard software programs and applications such as internet browsers and word processors will operate on any processor.

RAM, or Random Access Memory, is the place your applications are stored while you’re using them. Consequently, the more RAM you have, the more applications your PC can run simultaneously. RAM also has an effect on speed, so the more you have the faster your computer should perform. For the majority of tasks, RAM of 1GB or more will probably be enough. For more complex multi-tasking and large applications, consider 2GB or more.

The graphics chip on a computer system outputs the information onto a display unit such as a monitor or TV. Modern desktops have an built-in graphics chip, which is sufficient for viewing standard video and internet browsing. If you need to use a computer for graphically-intense applications, get a PC with discrete graphics which will come in the form of a dedicated PCI video card. Such recognized and reliable brands include ATI and nVidia. These brands have their very own memory onboard, contrary to built-in graphics; much like RAM, the more memory it has the faster it runs. Get a chip with more than 1GB for good quality performance.

If you want to burn CDs or DVDs, make sure to purchase a desktop computer that is included with a DVD-RW or CD-RW drive. A DVD-RW should come as standard in most products, but be safe and double check. If you want to use the more recent Blu-Ray format of discs on your computer, especially check because these are not standard yet. The phrase for such hardware is BD, so in case you want a Blu-Ray reader it will likely be designated as BD-ROM. In the same way, a Blu-Ray writer will be designated as BD-RW. BD-RW may cost much more so do not pay for it unless you need it.

It is crucial to take into account that if you have one component that is of a lower speed or size than the rest of the system this will almost certainly bring the overall performance down. For example, an ATI Radeon graphics card will perform much better on a PC with a quad-core processor than a single-core. Keep in mind though, if you do not need high performance, do not pay for it!

The Computer Monitor

Most displays available on the market are LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), as the good old CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) have since become obsolete. These monitors are thin and offer sharp, clear quality. All screens use either the VGA or DVI outputs on your PC, therefore be sure that the computer monitor works with the PC you want to purchase. Any 19″ monitor will be sufficient space for standard desktop work. A wide screen LCD will be a better option for watching video as well as for having windows side-by-side as they provide more horizontal space to work with. If you need to buy one or more monitors for your PC, make sure that the computer you’re purchasing has two video outputs. Dual video output will usually only be available on discrete graphics, which means you may have to factor this type of card into the cost in such a case.

Keyboards and Mice

These days, USB (Universal series bus) keyboards and mice are the standard. These gadgets will work on any modern laptop or desktop computer and do not need any software upgrade, these will work the moment they are connected to your computer. A few keyboards still use what is referred to as a PS/2 connection. PS/2 ports are built into the motherboard with the USB, and will work plug-and-play. If you want to use a wireless mouse and keyboard, these will often include a USB dongle which will stick into your computer and communicate as typical wired devices. Make sure that the range is sufficient to your requirements. For example, if you need to use the keyboard and mouse from your armchair, purchase a wireless kit with a range of fifteen meters or more.

Additional Items

Peripheral devices like audio speakers and USB external hard drives will be compatible with all devices, so do not look for these when purchasing a particular machine. To be secure and safe, try to find USB 2.0 compatible devices for your computer because these are faster than standard USB and therefore are becoming standard.
